This painting is a portrait of a woman with a very abstract background. I took inspiration from the 80’s pop/graffiti artist, Jean Michel Basquiat. I wanted to use symbolism within this painting that required critical thinking to fully understand. I was also inspired by Kerry James Marshall's work called Supermodel because of the way he used mixed styles. I wanted to express how black women should be allowed to be different and ‘weird’ and not have to fit into a single narrative, often stereotypical.
