This is a self-portrait. I wanted to portray myself in a somewhat fantastical way. I often find myself in a strange position as a black woman who doesn’t strictly attempt to fit in with the rest. I completely embraced myself and my black woman. I used a semi-realistic technique in this painting. I also used quilted fabric on my clothing. I was particularly inspired by Faith Ringgold in this aspect. Her use of quilting techniques and stylization both influenced this particular project.
